» Best Coast - “Boyfriend”
Here comes another lovefool summery tune from Best Coast’s debut full length. “Boyfriend” is a lo-fi anecdote of desire for a man declared as a (mere) friend. And that’s where her troubles begin. She ain’t satisfied with the “just friends” tag and pines for a more robust romance. This is where music begins: envy. I love you and you love me is a closed case. It’s dull writing song on those shores. So there must always be a third party, prettier, skinnier and with a college degree.
Bethany Cosentino (currently dating Nathan Williams of Wavves and therefore carrying the “Queen of the Beach” alias behind her back) and Bobb Bruno are the only two people behind the vintage garage charm of this short seductive opener. The album Crazy For You, just like this year’s similar lo-fi indie bands with frontwomen (Dum Dum Girls for instance) comes to an end with twelve short-lived tracks and a bonus song that is sometimes preferred by the band’s fresh fanbase. It’s called “When I’m With You”. It’s a catchy song with a crooked inner beauty but the opener you hear above is still the gaudy showstopper when we have to select one over the others.
