    Mixtape Vol.4: Tropical Mundane

Hope you make the best of it. Hope this summer is vintage enough for you to fulfill all your zests for nothingness and carpe diem. I tried to pick an eclectic collection of old and new, well-known and who’s-that artists. All juicy, spiced up and cocktailish. It’s not a sorta mixtape to relax you. It’s the kind that ignites a candle ‘neath your buttocks and impels you to do something, either sipping on a sweet nectar while dancing or wrestling with your lover in the pool. I don’t know.

» Wavves - “King of the Beach

Nathan Williams, the man behind the garage-rock outfit Wavves is back with a new approach to his lo-fi indie rock. This time hiring the late Jay Reatard’s backing band to sound psyche-pop in a garage! What you get is a Wavves-y interpretation of songs inspired by the surf sound of The Beach Boys and occasionally Animal Collective. King of the Beach is our unruly child’s album for your summer. Here, unlike the debut that dealt with more serious matters a la Goths and weed demons, we get Williams’ silver lining only if we forget about his acid tendencies, destructive behavior ( = being a jerk) and self-hatred. But hearing all the summer riffs and the surprising increase in delicious sun-tan guitar melodies, all that negativity can be history. “Mickey Mouse” is the time when Williams feels more sunk in the haze of Animal Collective’s Strawberry Jam. But the self-titled tune sums up the total amount of sweat you’re going to deal with. It’s the early boiling point to a disk filled with summer memories, whether good or evil! And don’t you get that La Bamba feeling as soon as you delve into the starting guitars? I do.

The guy blogs about random stuff. And it’s interesting how most of those matters have nothing to do with how his music turns out. I once thought it’s a hip-hop blog with the wrong link. He likes Everly Brothers!
